Available on the BRM website, this full-color guide spans seven pages and explains how product specifications and operating parameters support burr removal and an optimum surface finish on cylinder walls.

BRM cylinder hones are flexible, resilient honing tools that are used in surface finishing applications such as cylinder deglazing, plateau finishing, and cross-hole deburring. Made with abrasive globules that are laminated onto the ends of flexible nylon filaments, the Flex-Hone® is self-aligning, self-centering, and self-compensating for wear. The BRM brush tool produces a plateau finish that promotes oil retention.

Tool Diameter and Speed
As the Flex-Hone® Resource Guide explains, users should select cylinder honing tools based on product specifications such as tool diameter and use them in accordance with guidelines for stroke length and speed. Tool diameter is determined by the nominal bore size in which the flexible hone will operate. As a rule, cylinder hones are produced and used in an oversize condition.

BRM offers cylinder honing tools in diameters from 4-mm to 36”. Designed to work with any type or size of cylinder, ball hones are low RPM tools. Tool diameter and application determine the optimum speed. As a rule, smaller hones require faster speeds and larger hones require slower speeds. The Flex-Hone® Resource Guide lists general speed ranges, but machine trials are recommended to very parameters.

Stroke Rate and Lubrication
Stroke rate is also a function of Flex-Hone® diameter. Cross-hatch angle (if any) is also important to consider, especially since high cross-hatch angles require faster stroke rates. Larger-diameter cylinder honing tools may feed as slow as 100 to 120 inches per minute (IPM), but smaller-diameter cylinder hones with high cross-hatch angles may require feed up to 250 IPM.

Always use BRM flexible hones with a lubricant, preferably Flex-Hone® oil, and always lubricate generously to prevent tool loading and ensure the exposure of fresh cutting particles. Never use solvents, as they tend to degrade the adhesive bonds between the ball hone’s abrasive globules and flexible nylon abrasive filaments.
