A recent modification of the spray-and-fuse process, high-velocity oxy-fuel coatings use a high-velocity oxy-fuel flame spray gun to apply the coating prior to fusing. The as-sprayed coating is almost totally dense, in contrast to the conventionally sprayed version of this coating. This reduces the time required to spray and fuse the coating and can result in lower costs in high-volume applications. Coatings sprayed using the HVOF gun can also be used in the as-sprayed condition, although the wear resistance is not as good for the fused version. This has important implications for repair.
