Pressurex is a tactile force-indicating sensor that's useful in assessing compression magnitude and distribution between any two mating or impacting surfaces. Applications include both manufacturing process control and machine/component inspection and calibration.

The sensor comes in the form of a large thin sheet. When placed in between impacting or mating surfaces, the sensor film instantaneously and permanently changes color. The intensity of this color is proportional to the amount of force applied allowing the user to actually quantify the stress characteristics across the surface. Precise PSI (kg/cm2) can be determined by comparison of the sensor film to a color calibration chart (conceptually similar to interpreting Litmus paper), or by using one of several imaging systems that the company supplies.

Pressurex is a valuable tool for R&D and end-process evaluation and control for processes including punching, bending and flanging, rolling, bulging, coining, joining, swagging, sizing, metal spinning, and measuring the distribution of pressure in welding heads and cylinder nips. In general the film can be utilized for any application where pressure is applied on a work piece. It also helps determine machine calibration unit pressure distribution between components of machine assemblies such as teeth of gears, frames and shafts. Other applications include determination of effective placement of strain gauges, determination of drawing pressure in dies, and measuring the interface pressure in mechanically attached joints. The film enables the analysis of the dynamic behavior of individual particles. In general the film is a valuable aid in any situation where materials or solid surfaces come in contact with one another, and there exists a need to determine the distribution and/or magnitude of pressure.

This NDT technique can greatly enhance yields and improve quality with a relatively minor investment. With a maximum gauge of 8 mils, the sensor film is ideal for invasive intolerant environments that cannot accommodate traditional load cells and other transducers.
