CleanTech 2000: Metal Powders & Abrasives for Non-Destructive Blasting

Peerless Metal Powders & Abrasive (Detroit, MI) exhibited two of its soft metallic abrasive products at the show: UltraSoft Shot and Flex-Shot. Both products allow efficient blast cleaning without changing the surface of the parts being cleaned and without adding texture to the parts' surface composition.

UltraSoft Shot is designed to replace glass beads, plastic media, zinc shot and other soft abrasives in non-destructive blasting and polishing applications. The material exhibits a hardness of less than 20 HRC but typically runs between 12 and 15 HRC. It is a metallurgically enhanced, soft steel shot that is produced using proprietary manufacturing processes at the company's Detroit plant. It can be used in conventional blast cleaning machines (airblast and airless) without requiring equipment changes or special adjustments to the machine, allowing many parts to be finished at one time.

UltraSoft Shot is available in a variety of shot sizes ranging from US70 to US780 with custom shot and grit sizes available upon request.

The company also manufactures Flex-Shot, which is designed to replace glass beads, plastic media, ceramic media and other soft abrasives in non-destructive blasting and mold cleaning applications. This material has the same hardness levels of the UltraSoft Shot media.

Flex-Shot is a very low-carbon blast cleaning media that can be used to clean molds and other components in the delivery of molten glass, rubber and aluminum. Like the UltraSoft Shot product, it can be used in either airblast or airless blast cleaning machines without modifications to the machine. The media is available in many sizes, however the two most popular are FS70 (for airblast machines) and FS90 (for use in standard airless blast machines).

Both metallic abrasives media are ideal for a variety of applications, including the deflashing of non-ferrous die castings, removing paint and coatings from delicate surfaces, cleaning machined surfaces on steel or iron, and removing scale from heat-treated parts.
