Because the brushes perform deburring primarily by filing rather than by striking, dwell time is critical to performance. Unlike wire brushes, these brushes need to be run at low speeds and significant pressures for maximum effectiveness.

The brushes contain the same size abrasive grains as abrasive belts and grinding wheels. However, unlike conventional abrasive carriers in which the grains act like rigid cutting tools, nylon filaments are flexible abrasive carriers. The filaments are designed to deflect away from the work surface and absorb a large portion of the applied load. The effect is that these brushed do not produce scratches as deep as conventional brushes with the same grit size.
