Sanmina Receives Telcordia Certification for Usage of Durabond

Sanmina Corporation, a leading electronics contract manufacturer, announced that it has been awarded Telcordia (formerly Bellcore) Certification of DuraBOND as a replacement for black oxide in the fabrication of multi-layered printed circuit boards (PCBs).

Sanmina pursued this quality recognition based on the results of a comprehensive study that concluded that PC boards manufactured with McGean-Rohco's DuraBOND conform to the criteria from GR-78, TR-357, GR-1217 and other industry standards for 25 year service life in uncontrolled environments. This analysis is Telcordia's highest accreditation for a PCB fabrication process. Currently, DuraBOND is the only oxide or alternative oxide to achieve this high rating. Sanmina selected the DuraBond technology for its high volume, Mountain View, California bare printed circuit board facility. In February 1999, this site was also the world's first PCB fabrication facility to receive Telcordia's Certification of Excellence.

Commenting on the new process, Nate Woolsey, Sanmina's Vice President and General Manager of its Mountain View PCB facility, said, "The conveyorized DuraBOND process offers a reduced cycle time and wider processing window than conventional black oxide chemistries. The finish is also more compatible with the higher lamination temperatures required for high performance laminate materials used in high speed digital and RF printed circuit boards. Another unique advantage of DuraBOND is that cores coated with it can be automatically optically inspected (AOI), with both reflective and laser AOI equipment, thus eliminating most of the handling after AOI (prior to lamination) and, in turn, allows for a more reliably built circuit board. Installation of this new process underscores Sanmina's commitment to providing our telecommunications customers with leading-edge technology that exceed industry standards."

In addition to developing specialty chemical application technologies, such as DuraBond, McGean-Rohco, headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio is also a manufacturer of organic and inorganic chemicals and provides technical services on a worldwide basis through its network of technical sales representatives, distributors and affiliates.
