Union Carbide Licenses Aspen Technology's Enterprise Optimization Software

Union Carbide Corporation announced that it has licensed Enterprise Optimization software from Aspen Technology, Inc., the leading supplier of manufacturing enterprise optimization solutions for the process industries. The package combines AspenTech's Plantelligence manufacturing software with its Aspen Supply Chain Suite for all of Union Carbide's operations worldwide. The software solution will link real-time manufacturing operations and processes with the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems implemented by Union Carbide during the past two years.

The companies also announced that they plan to create a strategic alliance to offer a configured software solution, including manufacturing and work- process best practices, to licensees of Carbide's proprietary chemical processes and to other process industries. This technology is intended to bring significant value to licensees by reducing implementation costs and time. The planned alliance will focus initially on licensees of Carbide's UNIPOL process for polyolefins, METEOR process for ethylene glycol, and the LP OXO process.

"By standardizing on AspenTech's software across our entire enterprise, we expect to derive exceptional value from our ERP investment by coordinating our business and manufacturing processes," said William Joyce, Union Carbide chairman and CEO. "The configured software solution will be offered to our process licensees to help them maximize the value of Carbide's process technologies through the adoption of manufacturing and work-process best practices."

"By deploying our Enterprise Optimization software at all of its facilities, Union Carbide will be able to link ERP, supply-chain and plant manufacturing systems to optimize its key business processes," said Larry Evans, chairman and CEO of AspenTech. "We are looking forward to leveraging the strengths of both companies."

Mr. Evans added that AspenTech's Plantelligence solution is uniquely able to generate accurate computer models of process manufacturing plant performance, and then continually optimize plants in real time. Plantelligence integrates with Aspen MIMI supply chain software and ERP systems to enable simultaneous exchange of business and plant-level information. The combination of Plantelligence and Aspen Supply Chain software creates manufacturing enterprise optimization solutions that provide exceptional visibility at the corporate level into plant, enterprise and supply-chain operations.
