Veeco strengthens senior management team

PLAINVIEW, NY—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Veeco Instruments Inc. announced that it has added several senior management positions and strengthened its Group Management structure to address the continued sales growth of the Company.
According to Edward H. Braun, Chairman, CEO and President of Veeco, "In response to Veeco's continued sales growth, we have appointed four 'Group Presidents'—Kenneth T. Barry, Emmanuel N. Lakios, Robert Valentine and Don Kania, Ph.D. This structure provides the depth of management and focus required to achieve our goal of $1 billion in annual revenues in the next four years."
Kenneth T. Barry will join Veeco as President of the New York Process Equipment Operations effective February 12, 2001. Mr. Barry was formerly President and Chief Executive Officer of Materials Research Corporation (a division of Sony Electronics, Inc.). Mr. Barry was with Sony/MRC since 1991 in various senior level operational and management positions. Prior to Sony, Mr. Barry held positions with Pentair, Inc. and Harley-Davidson, Inc. Mr. Barry will oversee operations at Veeco's Plainview and Rochester, NY, Process Equipment facilities.
Emmanuel N. Lakios, currently Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales, has been named President of Worldwide Field Operations, which now includes worldwide sales, service and field marketing support. Mr. Lakios joined Veeco in 1984.
Robert Valentine, Vice President and General Manager of Ion Tech has assumed the title of President of Ion Tech. Since joining Ion Tech in October, Mr. Valentine has instituted significant changes at Ion Tech resulting in substantial revenue growth and improved operational and financial controls. Mr. Valentine has extensive engineering and manufacturing experience gained at Hewlett-Packard, Schlumberger and Borg Warner. Most recently he held the position of VP/GM of Borg Warner A/FS Instrumentation.
Don Kania, Ph.D. remains President of Veeco Metrology, a position he has held since last year. He was previously Vice President/General Manager of Veeco's Santa Barbara atomic force microscopy operations and prior to that Chief Technology Officer. Dr. Kania joined Veeco in 1997.
Other Management Appointments
In addition, Veeco has strengthened its senior marketing group. Paul Clayton has been appointed as Vice President, Marketing for Ion Tech. Mr. Clayton was previously Vice President, Marketing at SpeedFam-IPEC's CMP group, and has also held positions with KLA-Tencor and Schlumberger. Paul Hofemann joined Veeco in December as VP of Marketing for Process Equipment, New York. Mr. Hofemann was formerly Director of Product Marketing at KLA Tencor. Mr. Hofemann's other prior employers include Semi-Gas Systems and Applied Materials.
Veeco also promoted Hari Hegde, Ph.D. to the new position of Vice President of Process Technology. Dr. Hegde, who joined Veeco in 1995, will be responsible for directing process development, customer process support, sample demonstrations and manufacturing process support for Veeco's ion beam etch, ion beam deposition, physical vapor deposition and chemical vapor deposition product lines. Dr. Hegde's promotion emphasizes the importance of process development and support as a core competency within Veeco.
Veeco has also appointed Joel Geliebter to the newly created position of Vice President, Treasurer, reporting to Veeco's Chief Financial Officer, John F. Rein, Jr. According to Mr. Rein, "Veeco's size now requires a senior level Treasurer to oversee our cash management, insurance, financing, and foreign exchange operations." Mr. Geliebter's previous Treasury positions include Henry Schein and Sun Chemical Corporation.
